Following the passing of legendary screen industry figure John Barnett (CNZM, ONZM) last August, The Vista Foundation today announced that long-time board member and Vista co-founder Brian Cadzow has stepped into the role of Board Chair.

John Barnett’s impact on the New Zealand film and television landscape over five decades was immeasurable. As the Chair of the Vista Foundation since 2018, and the visionary producer behind iconic Kiwi stories like Whale Rider and Sione’s Wedding, John played a pivotal role in shaping the Foundation’s mission to nurture emerging talent and advocate for local storytelling.

While nine months have passed since John’s death, the Vista Foundation Board took this time intentionally to ensure that all future decisions fully honour their friend, his monumental legacy, and the ongoing work of the Foundation.

Brian Cadzow’s transition to Chair represents stability and a deep, seamless continuation of the values John championed. As one of the original founders of Vista Group, Brian helped coordinate the Foundation's initial funding and has served on the board since its inception. Bringing more than 25 years of association with the cinema and film industry, he provides the extensive commercial wisdom, administrative knowledge, and passion for the Kiwi screen sector required to lead the Foundation forward.

The Vista Foundation remains completely dedicated to building a more successful film industry in New Zealand. Under Brian’s continued guidance, the Foundation will honour John’s memory by expanding pathways and securing the funding necessary to continue empowering the next generation of Kiwi filmmakers.
